Booking choice: The Wild Australia keeper experience (non-refundable). Book this Details
Holding a koala is high on many visitors' lists, and it is not on offer at Taronga or anywhere else in Sydney. The zoo's Koala Encounter page states that guests are not permitted to touch or hold the koalas. What you get instead is a few minutes inside their habitat with the keepers who look after them.
Below: the Koala Encounter, the free koala walkway, the keeper-led tour sold on GetYourGuide, the other animal encounters and the two ways to stay overnight.
The quick answer
No holding or touching koalas at Taronga. The Koala Encounter is about five minutes with keepers inside Koala Country, held daily between 11am and 12:55pm for up to four people per session, on top of zoo entry. Book it at the Top Plaza shop from 9am or in the Taronga app. For longer, the Wild Australia keeper tour includes a personal Koala Encounter.

Can you hold a koala at Taronga Zoo?
No. Taronga states that guests are not permitted to touch or hold the koalas, including during the paid Koala Encounter.
The rule is wider than Taronga. WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo says on its help page that it is against the regulations for members of the public to cuddle koalas in Sydney and the rest of NSW. If a tour promises a koala cuddle near Sydney, read the small print.
Our take: the encounter is better than a cuddle. Koalas sleep much of the day, and watching one wake up and feed close by, with a keeper explaining what you are seeing, beats a photo with a sleepy animal.
What is the Taronga Zoo Koala Encounter?
About five minutes with keepers inside Koala Country, in Nura Diya Australia. It runs daily from 11am to 12:55pm for up to four people per session.
From Taronga's Koala Encounter page:
- Where: Koala Country, part of Nura Diya Australia.
- When: daily, sessions between 11:00am and 12:55pm.
- Who: up to four people per session, so a family books one session.
- Cost: a paid extra on top of your zoo ticket.
- Booking: at the Retail Shop at Top Plaza from 9am on the day, or in the Taronga app.
- Photos: the page does not say whether a photo is included. Bring your own camera.
Sessions sell on a first-in basis and depend on the koalas' welfare on the day. Taronga says arriving by 9am is essential to book an encounter, and hands out queue numbers from 8:45am.

Get to the Main Entrance early with your ticket sorted: the zoo's own day ticket, free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Book thisWhere can you see koalas at Taronga Zoo for free?
In Koala Country, on the Nura Diya Australia trail. A walkway takes you up into the tree canopy, and the koala keeper talk is at 2:30pm daily.
Nura Diya Australia is a 400 m trail of about 45 minutes. Koala Country lets you walk among the treetops at koala height, with no extra ticket. The trail also covers Kangaroo Country, a walk-through with kangaroos, wallabies and emus, plus Dingo Country, Nocturnal Country and an Australian rainforest aviary.
Come for the 2:30pm koala keeper talk (keeper talks). It is free with entry and you hear the same keepers who run the paid sessions.
What is the Wild Australia Experience at Taronga?
A two-hour, small-group tour with a zoo keeper, at most six guests, that includes a personal Koala Encounter, the animal kitchen and the nocturnal house behind the scenes.
The Wild Australia Experience is sold by Taronga on GetYourGuide. The zoo now calls the area Nura Diya Australia, but the product keeps its old name. The listing states:
- Two hours with a keeper, six guests at most, live guide in English.
- A personal Koala Encounter, the platypus and nocturnal animals.
- A visit to the working kitchen where animal meals are prepared.
- Behind-the-scenes access to the nocturnal exhibit.
- All-day zoo access, so you keep exploring afterwards.
- Meeting point: the Visitor Information Desk at the Main Entrance. Closed-toe shoes required.
One honest catch: it is non-refundable, and date changes need 24 hours' notice. Book it once your Sydney dates are fixed.

What other animal encounters does Taronga Zoo offer?
Giraffe, capybara, meerkat, dingo, rhino and a reptile behind-the-scenes tour, plus a penguin encounter in NSW school holidays. All cost extra.
Taronga's animal encounters page lists these, all sold first-in at the Top Plaza Retail Shop when the gates open at 9am:
| Encounter | What you do | Book |
|---|---|---|
| Koala | Step into Koala Country for a private talk with keepers | Shop or app |
| Giraffe | Meet the giraffes up close | Shop or app |
| Capybara | Learn from keepers and feed the herd | Shop |
| Meerkat | Enter the enclosure and place enrichment items | Shop |
| Dingo | Help keepers create enrichment for two dingoes | Shop |
| Rhino | Feel rhino skin and hear about Hari | Shop |
| Penguin | Feed the colony (NSW school holidays only) | Shop |
| Reptile & Amphibian Behind the Scenes | Tour the ARC with a reptile keeper | Shop |
Durations and minimum ages are not given on the main page. Ask at the shop, or check each encounter's own page.
Is there a private koala tour from Sydney?
Yes. A private day with Todd Tours drives the coast in the morning and books a keeper-led Wild Australia session with a Koala Encounter at Taronga in the afternoon.
The private coastal tour and Taronga experience picks you up at your hotel at 8am. The listing states a morning loop of Mrs Macquarie's Chair, Watsons Bay, The Gap and Bondi Beach, then the Wild Australia session from 1pm to 3pm with a keeper-led Koala Encounter and areas closed to other visitors. Drop-off at your hotel is about 3:30pm. You can also stay on at the zoo and catch the ferry back yourself.
Unlike the stand-alone keeper tour, this one cancels for free up to 24 hours before. The listing notes that the zoo session depends on availability and may run as a small shared group if a private one isn't available.
Can you sleep over at Taronga Zoo?
Yes, two ways: Roar and Snore, a tent sleepover for ages 5 and up, or the Wildlife Retreat, an eco-lodge inside the zoo grounds.
Roar and Snore is a safari-tent night with harbour views, night tours, behind-the-scenes animal encounters and dinner. Check-in is 5:15pm and it ends about 9:30am the next day. Taronga asks for good fitness, as there is steep walking after dark.
Wildlife Retreat at Taronga has bushland, animal-view and harbour-view rooms and a treetop suite. Every stay includes zoo entry for the length of the stay, daily breakfast and a pickup from the ferry wharf on request (not for children under 8).

What is Keeper for a Day at Taronga Zoo?
A hands-on program working alongside zoo keepers, in three age groups: Junior Keepers 8 to 11, Cadet Keepers 12 to 17, and Adult Keepers 18 and over.
Taronga describes Keeper for a Day as hands-on access to wildlife care, guided by its keepers. The main page does not give a duration or start time; each age group has its own booking page. It is the deepest look behind the scenes the zoo sells.
For a first visit, the cheaper options are plenty: free keeper talks all day, and our timing guide shows how to fit them in.
Koala Country, the 2:30pm koala talk and both shows: all part of the zoo's own day ticket.
