Taronga Zoo or Sydney Zoo?

Sydney has three places with "zoo" and "Sydney" in the name, and none of them is the same as the others. Here is how to tell them apart and pick the right one.

Booking choice: The Taronga Zoo entry ticket. Book this Details

Search for "Sydney zoo" and you get three answers. Taronga Zoo on the harbour, Sydney Zoo in Western Sydney, and WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo indoors at Darling Harbour. Add Featherdale near Blacktown and Australia Zoo, which isn't in Sydney at all, and it is easy to book the wrong ticket.

Taronga adds to the confusion itself: its own web address uses /sydney-zoo/. This guide sets the five side by side, using each zoo's own site where possible.

The quick answer

Taronga Zoo and Sydney Zoo are different zoos. Taronga is the older, larger one on the harbour at Mosman, reached by ferry. Sydney Zoo is a newer private zoo at Bungarribee in Western Sydney, best by car. WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo is a small indoor attraction at Darling Harbour, and Australia Zoo is in Queensland. For a first visit to Sydney, pick Taronga.

Are Taronga Zoo and Sydney Zoo the same?

No. Taronga Zoo is at Mosman on Sydney Harbour and opened in 1916. Sydney Zoo is a separate private zoo at Bungarribee in Western Sydney that opened in 2019.

The two are run by different organisations, sell different tickets and sit on opposite sides of the city. Taronga is run by the Taronga Conservation Society. Sydney Zoo is privately owned and sits at 700 Great Western Highway, Eastern Creek, in the Western Sydney Parklands.

The mix-up has a real cause. Taronga's own site files its visitor pages under /sydney-zoo/, and some search results show "Sydney Zoo tickets" for Taronga. Before paying, check the address on the ticket: Bradleys Head Road, Mosman is Taronga.

Which Sydney zoo should you visit?

Taronga for harbour views and the ferry, Sydney Zoo for elephants and easy parking, WILD LIFE Sydney for a short indoor visit in the city.

Which is bigger, Taronga Zoo or Sydney Zoo?

Taronga. It covers 28 hectares against about 16.5 at Sydney Zoo, and counted 276 species at its 2026 animal census.

Taronga's visitor information gives 28 hectares of hilly ground. Sydney Zoo is about 16.5 hectares according to Wikipedia, and its own site says it has over 150 species. In July 2026 Taronga's census counted more than 6,500 animals of 276 species at the Sydney zoo (Australasian Leisure Management).

Size is not the same as effort. Taronga's hectares sit on a steep headland, so it feels bigger on the legs than the map suggests.

Is Taronga Zoo better than Sydney Zoo?

For most visitors to Sydney, yes, because of the setting and the ferry. Sydney Zoo wins on elephants and free parking.

Pick Taronga if you are staying in the city, want the ferry ride past the Opera House, and care about the setting. Taronga calls itself the only zoo with views over Sydney Harbour. Its free seal and bird shows run with the skyline behind them, and Nura Diya Australia covers the native animals most visitors come for.

Pick Sydney Zoo if you want elephants. Taronga's last two moved to Monarto Safari Park in South Australia in 2025 (see where Taronga's elephants went), and Sydney Zoo's site now calls its herd Sydney's only elephants. It also suits families with a car in the western suburbs: free parking and no ferry to time.

What is WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo at Darling Harbour?

A mostly indoor wildlife attraction in Darling Harbour, run by Merlin Entertainments. It shows Australian animals only and takes far less time than Taronga.

WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo opened in 2006 and walks you along a route of about 1 km through indoor habitats (Wikipedia). It has no connection to Taronga. Good for a rainy hour in the city or a quick koala sighting between other Darling Harbour sights. It is no replacement for a day at Taronga: no harbour headland, no seal show, no giraffes.

Is Featherdale Wildlife Park worth it instead of Taronga?

As an add-on, yes; as a replacement, only if native animals are all you want. Featherdale focuses on Australian wildlife at Doonside, near Blacktown.

Featherdale Sydney Wildlife Park says it is home to over 2,000 Australian native animals and opens 8am to 5pm daily. Its site advertises the chance to pat a koala, which Taronga does not offer. It is in Western Sydney, so most people combine it with Sydney Zoo or a Blue Mountains day rather than with Taronga.

Is Australia Zoo in Sydney?

No. Australia Zoo is in Beerwah on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, north of Brisbane. It is the Irwin family's zoo and has no link to Taronga.

Bob and Lyn Irwin opened it in 1970, and it later became famous through Steve Irwin (Wikipedia). You cannot do it as a day trip from Sydney. If you are flying up to Queensland anyway, it is a separate trip. If you are in Sydney for a few days, Taronga is the zoo to do.

Do Blue Mountains tours stop at Taronga Zoo?

Not the ones we checked. The Blue Mountains day tours with a zoo stop visit Sydney Zoo in Western Sydney, which is on the way to the mountains.

Read the itinerary before you book a "Blue Mountains and zoo" tour. The GetYourGuide Blue Mountains tour with a zoo stop lists Sydney Zoo, not Taronga. That makes sense on a map: Sydney Zoo sits beside the Great Western Highway out west, and Taronga is in the opposite direction, on the harbour.

Tours that do include Taronga: the spring jacaranda day tour gives you about two hours inside, and the private coastal tour pairs Bondi and Watsons Bay with a keeper-led session at Taronga.
